About Us

About Troop 87 . . .
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America and Troop 87 is to prepare young men to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.  Since 1987 when our troop began, we have helped well over 100 boys earn the rank of Eagle Scout.  But more importantly, we have helped boys to prepare for adulthood.  We understand that our youth will always be critical to the future of our society and our country and we want to make a difference!

Our model  . . .
Our model for troop organization, promoted by the national office of the BSA and developed by Lord Baden Powell, is that troops are to be run by the boys.  Thus the boys should plan and carry out the program of the troop, assisted only as needed by adults.  So in Troop 87, boys plan the annual calendar as well as the program for meetings and campouts.  They are also responsible for executing the plans once they're made.  Adults in the troop refrain from helping more than necessary.  This means that programs will sometimes fail (sometimes spectacularly) and occasionally programs will be somewhat chaotic.  But these consequences are to be expected.  We believe the boys learn from their own mistakes much more than any well-intentioned adult could teach them.  In the process of planning and executing the program, the scouts are actively achieving the Aims of Scouting.  Troop 87 prides itself in being a boy-lead troop!
